This home is located on a point looking out to San Juan Island and the Southern Gulf Islands and has an abundance of natural light everywhere. The compound curves forming the roof made for a challenging and labour intensive build, with more than 30 different radii for various curves. Entry to the property is through gates hung between the workshop and garden shed, which open to a fenced south facing courtyard. The window and door frames were mostly fabricated on site by R. Parsons Construction. The structural posts were rebated to accept the window mullions and rails, then glazed on site — 188 pieces of glass! Power comes from solar panels, with a backup generator powered by propane. Forced air heat is fuelled by propane, as are the two tankless hot water heaters. Flooring is a combination of reclaimed fir, handmade Mexican tiles and Pennsylvania bluestone set in an ashlar pattern. The kitchen is round, 8' in diameter — the tight radius made for some problem solving for the windows, siding, cabinets and granite countertops. The doors are framed and panelled vertical grain fir, as are the baseboards and casings.
